How to Use Sticky Wall

Sticky Wall is an infinite canvas of digital sticky notes. Everything is saved automatically in your browser — no account, no sign-up, no install required. This page covers every feature from creating your first note to navigating a large board across multiple walls.

1. Adding a note

Click the + Add note button in the top-right toolbar. A new sticky note appears near the centre of whichever part of the canvas you are currently viewing, ready to be edited or dragged into position. On mobile, tap the button — it is always visible in the toolbar.

Each note gets a random pastel colour automatically. If you want a note in a specific place, add it first and then drag it there.

2. Editing a note

On desktop

Double-click anywhere in the body of the note to open the text editor. A textarea appears — type or paste your content freely. Press Esc or click outside the note to save and close the editor.

On mobile / touch

Double-tap the body of the note. The text editor opens and the keyboard appears. Tap outside the note when you are done — your text is saved instantly.

3. Moving notes

On desktop

Click and drag any note by its header or body (anywhere except the text area when editing). Notes can be placed anywhere on the infinite canvas — there are no boundary constraints.

On touch screens

Press and hold a note, then drag it to the desired position. Notes move freely across the entire canvas regardless of the current zoom level.

Clicking or tapping a note also brings it to the front if it is hidden behind other notes.

4. Navigating the canvas

The canvas is infinite — you can pan and zoom freely in any direction to organise your notes across as much space as you need.

The current zoom percentage is shown between the + and buttons. Click or tap the percentage label, or click the reset button, to return to 100 % zoom at the canvas origin.

5. Deleting a note

Click the × button in the top-right corner of the note. The note is removed immediately. There is no undo, so use the Export feature first if you want a backup before a major cleanup.

6. Working with multiple walls (tabs)

The tab bar below the main toolbar lets you keep several independent walls — useful for separating topics, projects, or time periods.

Adding a new wall

Click the + button at the right end of the tab bar. A new wall named New Tab is created and becomes the active wall immediately.

Switching between walls

Click any tab in the tab bar to switch to that wall. Only the notes belonging to the selected wall are shown on the canvas.

Renaming a wall

Double-click a tab label to rename it. An inline text field appears — type the new name and press Enter or click elsewhere to confirm. Press Esc to cancel without saving. On touch devices, double-tap the tab label to start renaming.

Moving a note to another wall

Click the button in the top-left corner of any note. A small menu appears listing all other walls. Click the destination wall name and the note moves there instantly — it disappears from the current wall and will be visible when you switch to the target wall.

Closing a wall

Click the × icon next to a tab name. A confirmation dialog appears warning that all notes on that wall will be permanently deleted. Confirm to close, or cancel to keep the wall. The last remaining wall cannot be closed.

7. Exporting your notes

Click Export in the toolbar. Your browser downloads a .json file named stickywall-notes-YYYY-MM-DD.json containing every note from every wall, including their positions, colours, and wall assignments. Use this as a backup or to transfer your notes to another device.

8. Importing notes

Click Import in the toolbar and select a previously exported .json file. The notes in the file are merged into your current walls:

9. Your data & privacy

All notes are stored exclusively in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is sent to any server. Clearing your browser data or using a different browser or device will show an empty wall. Export regularly if your notes matter to you.

See the Privacy Policy for full details on data storage and advertising.
